Moving advice
Here at Man and Van we offer a range of professional house removal, office relocation and man and van hire services throughout Putney and all areas of London.
Because we honestly care about making your home move as smooth running and stress free as possible we have put together a selection of moving tips and removal and packing advice that we hope you will find helpful.
After Exchange of Contracts
- Confirm the moving date with your removals company and advise them of finer details such as access to your property and parking instructions.
- Get in touch with utility providers to arrange services in your new property and advise current providers of your move. Make a note to take meter readings on moving day.
- Organise buildings and contents insurance for your new property.
- Arrange for your telephone, internet and cable or satellite television service to be transferred.
- Arrange for your post to be forwarded.
- Let your employer, Revenue and Customs, accountant, local authority, bank, building society, credit card provider and mobile phone provider know your new address.
- Notify the DVLA of your change of address and arrange to have your vehicle log book and driving licence updated.
- Advise your car insurance and roadside assistance companies that you are moving.
- Inform your window cleaner, newspaper delivery, milkman, etc. and settle any outstanding bills.
- Make sure everyone – including your removals company, solicitor and estate agents – has your mobile number in case they need to contact you on the day of your move.
- Make arrangements for any children and pets to be looked after on the day of the move.
- If you have not opted for the packing service from your removals company then start packing smaller items and check that you have enough boxes, packing materials and marker pens.
Packing Tips
- Use coloured labels or mark your boxes and items with a different colour for each room to allow the removal company to place the items in the correct room at the new property.
- Only use strong packing cartons that are specifically designed for removals purposes. Packing the removals van is much easier if the cartons are all the same size, and your belongings will be far safer in custom made cartons.
- Do not overfill cartons – and do not under fill them as they could collapse if heavier items are placed on top of them.
- Use proper heavy-duty packing tape to seal the cartons.
- Don´t pack any valuables or important documents. Keep your keys, passport, driving licence, money, bank and credit cards, cheque book, jewellery, mobile phone, etc. to hand. You may also want to keep irreplaceable items such as photographs or negatives with you.
- Before you leave the property, check each and every room of the house to make sure nothing is left behind. Don´t forget the loft, basement, shed, garage and any other outbuildings.
- Put together a box of items that need to go on the removals van last so they are first off at the new property. This could include things like a kettle, mugs and spoons, tea and milk as well as a torch, cleaning materials and loo roll.
Man and Van wishes you the best of luck with your London home move!
